BRANFORD — Branford used a big first half to sail past St. Francis Catholic 34-8 in the season opener Friday night at Buccaneer Stadium.
Leading 20-0 at halftime, the Buccaneers pulled their starters early in the third quarter with a running clock after tacking on two scores to open the second half.
But Branford made the most of that half of action.
Junior quarterback Seth Heiderman completed 9 of 11 passes for 166 yards and three touchdowns, two to Colton Leibold and the other to Junior Cress. Leibold hauled in five catches for 112 yards and the two scores.
Dakota Hamm added 88 yards and a touchdown rushing on nine carries for Branford.
The Bucs’ defense got into the act as well against the Wolves with Zach Lebrun, Leibold and Clay Williams all recording interceptions.
Bodhi White scored Branford’s other touchdown with an 80-yard fumble recovery return.
Branford travels to Maclay on Friday, eyeing its first 2-0 start since 2009. The Marauders lost 42-36 to Freeport on Friday.
