LIVE OAK, Fla. — Needless to say it was a Valentine’s week to remember for two Suwannee County families.
When Ashley Davis suggested trying to attend the “Today” show while on a mini vacation in New York last week, she never expected her 10-year-old son, Collyn, to become the star of the show.
However when discussing what signs to make for the Feb. 11 show, Collyn and his father, Matt, came up with one that caught everyone’s attention.
“My dad said why don’t we just make a sign,” Collyn said, adding his mom was working on a Live Oak sign. “I made the sign and it said, ‘Aubrey, will you be my Valentine?’”
One thousand miles away, back in Live Oak, 11-year-old Aubrey Driggers had no idea what her boyfriend had in store in New York.
Not until her mother, Kelly, sent the video to her Suwannee Intermediate School teacher, Jenny Clark, at least.
“Mrs. Clark put it under the projector and showed the whole class,” Kelly Driggers said.
And what did Aubrey think?
“It made my day,” she said.
But not only did the sign make it on TV. Collyn did too. When scanning the crowd, Collyn’s sign got him an interview with Carson Daly on the show as well as another appearance on “Today with Hoda and Jenna.”
“Hoda loved his sign,” Ashley Davis said. “They asked him to be on the Hoda show.
“We were just in awe of it all, all the people that are down there. One of the things they said, everybody has birthday signs but this sign stuck out to her.
“It was an awesome experience.”
The awesome experience wasn’t over yet, either.
Later in the day, Aubrey made a sign of her own that was sent to the Davises that read, “I would love to be your Valentine.”
And what did Collyn think?
“I was very happy and very excited,” he said.
But the young Live Oak lovebirds’ time in the spotlight wasn’t over just yet.
Matt Davis shared the photo of Aubrey’s response with the Today show and the duo got additional airtime Feb. 12 with Hoda and Jenna letting their national audience know that this Valentine’s Day love story had a happy ending.
It also, incidentally, will likely make Aubrey harder to impress in the future.
“It’s one we’ll cherish forever,” Kelly Driggers said. “It will be hard to top that.
“He set the standard high.”
