LIVE OAK — The Suwannee County School Board will hold a public hearing Monday to set the millage rate for the 2019-20 fiscal year.
The hearing will be held at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the Suwannee County School District Board Room, 1729 SW Walker Ave., Suite 300.
The proposed total millage rate the school board will consider is 6.156. The current millage rate is 6.167.
The millage rate consists of the required local effort millage rate that is set by the state, the capital outlay millage rate and the discretionary operating millage rate.
The proposed local effort millage rate is 3.9080, which will be a slight decrease from the current 3.919. The capital outlay (1.5 mills) and discretionary operating millage rate of 0.7480 mills are proposed to not change.
The capital outlay tax will generate approximately $3,070,434.
Total, the school district’s tax levy is proposed at $13,126,101, which is an increase from last year.
“You’re seeing a notice of a proposed tax increase even though the certified millage rate that was provided by the DOE is less than last year, that’s because of an increase in the tax rolls,” said Vickie DePratter, the district’s chief financial officer in a board meeting last week. “There was a small increase in the tax rolls.”
