MAYO — A man was killed Thursday morning after he was struck by a semi truck on U.S. Highway 27 just south of Mayo.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 66-year-old man was hit in the northbound lane of U.S. 27 near the County Road 400 intersection in between Mayo and Alton, and came to rest on the east shoulder of the road.

The pedestrian, whose name has not been released pending next of kin notification, was transported to Shands Live Oak Regional Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries, according to the FHP release.

All lanes of U.S. 27 reopened late Thursday morning.

Charges are pending FHP’s investigation.

The driver of the semi, 67-year-old William Saunders, of Bell, was not injured in the accident.

FHP does not believe alcohol played a role.
