MAYO, Fla. — A correctional officer was assaulted and an inmate was killed in separate incidents Wednesday at the Mayo Correctional Institution Annex.
According to the Florida Department of Corrections, two inmates assaulted an officer using improvised weapons.
The officer suffered serious injuries from the attack before additional security staff was able to subdue the inmates, according to the DOC release.
The officer was examined and treated by medical staff before being transported to an area hospital for additional treatment to his injuries. He has since been released from the hospital, the release states.
“We are grateful our officer is expected to make a full recover,” DOC Secretary Mark Inch said in a release. “He showed extraordinary courage and his teammates are to be commended for their quick response.
“We appreciate our correctional officers who serve in this often-overlooked profession dedicated to public safety.”
While officers responded to the assault, they received information about a suspected inmate on inmate homicide elsewhere in the facility, and officer then found a deceased inmate, according to the release.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the incidents. Due to the ongoing investigation, names and further information have not been released.
