Pioneer Day festivities in Mayo are Saturday, Oct. 12, and the Mayo Woman’s Club is gearing up for another successful Pioneer Day Art Show inside the lobby of Lafayette State Bank.

The theme this year is “Reminiscing from your front porch”. Fine arts categories include acrylic, oil, watercolor, pastel, charcoal, pencil, pen and ink, and mixed media. In the photography category entries can be black and white or color for portraits and all others.

Craft entries include needlework, quilts, crochet, knitting, tatting, stained glass, jewelry, and wood carving/turning.

Cash prizes and ribbons will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners in each category. All adult entries will be eligible for the Annette Croft Award-Best of Show, sponsored by Lafayette State Bank. A new award in honor of Judy Bletard will be presented to Best of Show-Childrens.

If you are interested in participating, the rules allow for two entries per category with a $4 fee for each item entered in the show for participants over the age of 12. Checks can be made out to the Woman’s Club Art Show Fund.

The rules state that entries must be items that have never before been entered in the show and must have been created within the last three years (2010-2013). Entries must be delivered to Lafayette State Bank on Thursday, Oct. 10 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. or on Friday, Oct. 11 from 9 a.m. to noon. Only display ready items will be accepted.

All two-dimensional artwork must be framed and ready to hang with a wire hanger (no saw-toothed hangers, please). Three-dimensional artwork must be accompanied with a small table or stand for display, no exceptions.

After the art show when the winners have been announced, only artwork that won Best of Show, Theme Award and People’s Choice Award will be displayed at the Lafayette County Courthouse, who will not be held responsible for replacement of lost, stolen or damaged items. These displayed items must be removed from the courthouse by Nov. 1.

The art show committee may, at its discretion, reject any artwork that is overweight, oversized or of objectionable material.
