Ivy league family

LIVE OAK — Sidney Lord, a Suwannee County native and lifetime farmer, and his wife, Patricia, have three granddaughters attending three different Ivy League Colleges this fall. Who would have thought that could be possible?

Two of the granddaughters graduated from Suwannee High School. Meredith Lord, daughter of Jackson and Michelle (Clark) Lord and a 2016 SHS graduate, is finishing her senior year at Cornell University studying Agricultural Science and Business. Natalie Lord, a 2018 SHS graduate, the class valedictorian and also the daughter of Jackson and Michelle, is in her sophomore year at Yale University studying Economics and Mathematics. Both young women were born and raised in Suwannee County.

The third granddaughter, Carter Suzanne Grant, daughter of Kevin Adrienne (Lord) Grant of Jacksonville, is attending Princeton Theological Seminary pursuing her Master’s of Divinity, to become a Presbyterian minister. Carter’s mother, Adrienne, also grew up in Suwannee County. Carter is a 2014 graduate of Allen D. Nease High School in Ponte Vedra.

“I am proud of all three of these girls” Lord said, “but remember, I’ve got some more grandkids coming along too. And, I’ve got a grandson, Jarrett Grant, at University of Tennessee studying to be an engineer.”

When asked specifically about the accomplishments of the three granddaughters, Lord replied that it is not too surprising because all three come from a long line of strong women. He said that one of his own sisters, Dorothy L. Lord, was the first woman to be College President of a Georgia two-year college. Dr. Lord served as President of Coastal Georgia Community College for 19 years, and received the prestigious Eve Award in 2005 for her success in establishing a second campus in Kingsland, Georgia.

Dorothy’s list of accomplishments is long, and she began advocating for the advancement of women in education when she was about the same age as these young women. And, like her niece Natalie, she too was a Suwannee High School valedictorian, class of 1960.

All three young women are granddaughters of Sidney and Patricia Lord of Live Oak, and the late Janice (Carter) Lord. Meredith and Natalie Lord are the granddaughters of Edwina Clark of Live Oak and the late Ronald Clark. Carter and Jarrett Grant are the grandchildren of David and Suzanne Grant of Seneca, S.C.
