LIVE OAK — Stephanie Duarte and Shaniyah Williams, Suwannee High School students and members of the school’s Green Team, were guest speakers at a recent Live Oak Garden Club’s luncheon meeting.

For many years the Live Oak Garden Club has provided scholarships for students to attend an environmental conference called “SEEK,” which stands for “Saving the Earth’s Environment through Knowledge.” These conferences are provided by the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs where students visit different ecosystems in Florida in order to learn and study the wildlife, plants, waters and environmental issues related to each location.

Duarte, a senior, has attended the last three conferences. Assisted by Williams, Duarte recapped to club members her experiences as to what she has learned. She also shares her knowledge with members of the school’s environmental club called the Green Team. Duarte noted that plastics are a real problem as they are polluting our waters and landfills. Currently, the Green Team is asking their school to provide vending machines available at the school to dispense drinks in aluminum cans rather than plastic bottles.

Jessica Clinard of Wynn’s Daylilies will be the club’s guest speaker at its Friday, Oct. 18, luncheon meeting. Contact President Shirley Reaves at 364-7600 for reservations.

The club’s Fall Festival/Pancake Breakfast will be held Saturday, Oct. 26, from 8-11 a.m.
