ORLANDO — The Lafayette FFA Chapter joined more than 5,000 members, alumni, supporters and guests at the 91st Florida FFA State Convention & Expo at the Caribe Royale in Orlando from June 10-14.

The Lafayette FFA Chapter competed in six state semifinal leadership development events and all six advanced to the state finals. The chapter also had five seniors receive their State FFA Degree. The seniors were Ainsley Peterson, James Gay, Hannah McCray, Landry Driver and Ali Singletary.

In the leadership development events, Lafayette FFA had three state runner-up finishes. Ainsley Peterson finished second in Extemporaneous Public Speaking, while both the High School Parliamentary Procedure and Middle School Parliamentary Procedure teams also placed second. High school team members were Gabrielle Perry, James Gay, Jackson Powers, Savannah Lents, Landry Driver, Hannah McCray, Skyler Lawson and Abigail Fredriksson. The middle school team included Trey Galbraith, Ella Hancock, Samantha Moser, Brannan Lamb, Cason Driver, Ethan Pittman, Taylor Swinson, Lilli Mosleley and Savanna King.

Hailey Peterson finished third in Prepared Public Speaking.

Placing fourth were Mallory McCray in Creed Speaking and the Conduct of Chapter Meetings team, which included Daniela Camarillo, Seth Chandler, Evan Murray, Mackenzie Winburn, Davis Jackson, Marah Land, Ayden Hart, Kelley Howell and McKenna Thomas.

The top five career development event teams of the 2018-2019 school year were also recognized at the fourth general session. They were: Middle School Livestock Evaluation, State Champion; Meats Evaluation, State Champion; Forestry, State Runner-Up; Dairy Evaluation, State Runner-Up; Livestock Evaluation, 5th Place; Middle School Dairy Evaluation, 3rd Place; Middle School Meats Evaluation, 4th Place.

The Lafayette FFA Chapter finished the school year with 12 top five placings, two state championships, five state runner-up placings, and two top four national placings.

The Lafayette FFA Chapter appreciates Mrs. Louisa Lyons for serving as the week’s “cook” and Mrs. Sharee Byrd for driving the school bus. The chapter also appreciates the Lafayette FFA Alumni and Mr. and Mrs. Jason Chandler for donating toward convention food. Due to chapter fundraising the costs of convention was reduced by 2/3 for chapter members to attend. Principal Stewart Hancock also attended the convention.
