LIVE OAK — Keith Mixon, Live Oak city council president, was found dead in his house Sunday morning from what is believed to be a massive heart attack or pulmonary embolism. He was 65.
According to Terry Mixon, Keith’s brother, the two planned on seeing the Florida vs. Miami baseball game in Gainesville on Sunday. When Terry Mixon arrived at Keith’s house that morning, the doors were locked and his truck was still in the driveway, so he called 911.
He was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials told Terry Mixon that he most likely died Saturday night. The last anyone heard from him was around 6 p.m. Saturday.
Keith Mixon’s four children will be in Live Oak for the viewing service at Daniels Funeral Home on Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. This will be open to the public.
The funeral service will be held at First Baptist Church and will start at 11 a.m. Thursday.
Mixon’s daughter Emy posted about her father’s passing on his campaign's Facebook page.
“Friends, I am so sad to say that my Daddy, Keith Mixon, passed away last night,” she wrote Sunday. “He was 65, with the energy of a 30-year-old and the determination of a 20-year-old.
“The things he loved most in this world were his family and Live Oak, Florida. He was hilarious, he was hard-headed, and he was one of the biggest personalities I ever knew.”
Mixon was elected to the city council in 2012 and became the council’s president in 2015. Mixon also has served as the Community Redevelopment Agency chairman.
Councilman Bennie Thomas will fill in as council president. The city has moved a special called meeting and Community Redevelopment Meeting for early next week until after the funeral.
