Adelaida “Dely” Smith, 61, of Jasper died of injuries sustained in a head-on collision on Thursday, Nov. 2, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol. Her husband, Joseph Calvin Smith, 73, was seriously injured and transported to Lake City Medical Center.

Joseph Smith was driving his 2001 Mazda van north on US Hwy. 41, just north of SE Race Track Lane in Columbia County, the report states. Michael Thornton, 25, of Gainesville, was traveling south on US 41 and failed to see that the traffic ahead of him was slowing or stopping. When he attempted to stop his 1993 Ford pick-up, the brakes caused the vehicle to pull left into the northbound lane, resulting in a head-on collision the FHP report said.

Dely Smith was transported by helicopter to Shands Hospital in Gainesville, where she did not recover from her injuries, according to the report. Thornton was treated for minor injuries at the scene of the accident.

There was approximately $15,000 damage to the Smiths’ van, the report states, and $4,000 damage to Thornton’s truck.

The accident was not alcohol-related, according to the report. Charges are pending an investigation.
