John Hill announces candidacy for city council

LIVE OAK — To the Citizens of Live Oak, Florida, District 4,

I respectfully request that I be taken into consideration as a Candidate to fill the position of Live Oak City Councilman for District 4. I am a long-time resident of Live Oak and have been actively involved in a variety of civic and community activities. I believe I will be able to fulfill the responsibilities of the position in a positive and productive manner.

My educational background includes graduating from Branford High School. I received a Bachelor of Science from Florida State University in Industrial Engineering. I was commissioned into the U.S. Army through ROTC in 1973, where I graduated with honors from the United States Army’s Infantry Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Fort Benning, Ga., and Military Instructors’ School, Fort Indiantown Gap, Penn. I also served as an Infantry Offensive Tactics Instructor at the U.S. Army Infantry School in Fort Benning. My military duties included Platoon Leader, Company Executive Officer and Company Commander as well as Military Instructor. Other education and business training include a graduate of Ford Marketing Institute, Florida Real Estate Institute and the Florida Auctioneer Academy.

I am an active member of the National Auctioneers Association, the Florida Auctioneers Association, Florida Association of Realtors and National Association of Realtors, a Board Member of the North Florida Multiple Listing Service, and a member of the Lake City Board of Realtor’s Ethics Hearing Committee. I’m a member of the Suwannee County Chamber of Commerce, Past-President of Live Oak Kiwanis Club, Past-Lt. Governor/District 4 Florida Kiwanis, Live Oak Kiwanian of the Year, Distinguished Kiwanian and a Suwannee High Bulldog Booster. 

I am married to Karen Ives Hill, who teaches at Shining Star Academy of the Arts in Lake City, after retiring from 30 years of teaching in the public schools in Columbia County. We have two children. Jonathon, who recently completed 3 1/2 years in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper where he served in Germany and Afghanistan. He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal and the coveted Combat Infantry Badge. He currently teaches History and Social Studies at Shining Star Academy of the Arts in Lake City. Susan is a Registered Nurse, who specializes in Cardiac Critical Care and Trauma. She currently works as a traveling nurse.

Professionally, I was a certified teacher at Suwannee High School where I taught Industrial Arts. Currently I am the owner of JW Hill and Associates, Inc., a Real Estate Brokerage and Auction Company. I am a partner in Florida Commercial Brokers Network and I recently purchased Hogan’s Just Play It Sports, which I moved to downtown Live Oak. JW Hill and Associates has received numerous professional awards including the Florida Commercial Brokers Network “Firm of the Year” in 2011 and in 2014, as well as the Florida Auctioneers’ Association “Five Gavel Award” for Auction Excellence.  

My goals for the City of Live Oak are as follows:

  • Review of the city utility ordinances and their application
  • Review of the Land Development Regulations and their application
  • Work with the county and state to improve roads and streets
  • A thorough evaluation of building and zoning policies and their application
  • Cooperation and communication between city, county and economic development agencies
  • Create a business-friendly environment
  • Maintain a low tax rate — learn to do more with less
  • Enforce city ordinances fairly and equally
  • Create a citizen-friendly responsive city government
  • Work diligently to bring good-paying, clean jobs to Live Oak

The major issue before us continues to be balancing fiscal responsibility with sound judgment. I believe that my past education, work experience, diversified life experiences and volunteer involvement have prepared me to work in many different settings, recognize problems, find solutions to problems and operate within a budget. I will always listen to the concerns of the citizens of Live Oak. Should I be elected, I intend to be the voice for the citizens of District 4.
