JASPER — The Hamilton County School Board is holding a public hearing Tuesday to set its millage rate for the upcoming fiscal year.
The hearing is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. Tuesday at the Hamilton County School District Office, 5683 U.S. Highway 129 South.
The school board will consider a total millage rate of 6.236. The current millage rate is 6.434.
The millage rate consists of the required local effort millage rate that is set by the state, the capital outlay millage rate and the discretionary operating millage rate.
The proposed local effort millage rate is 3.738, a decrease from the current rate of 3.936 mills.
The capital outlay (1.5 mills) and the discretionary operating millage rate is proposed to be 0.748 mills. The board also has proposed an additional operating millage not to exceed four years of 0.250 mills. None of those are proposed to change from the current rate.
The capital outlay tax will generate approximately $1,275,250.
Total, the school district’s tax levy is proposed at $5,651,114, an increase from last year.
