JASPER — Hundreds gathered on Monday in Jasper for a Memorial Day service.

Master Sergeant Crystal Kistler, a former White Springs resident who now resides in Hurlbert Field, Florida, was the guest speaker.

She spoke to the large crowd about honoring and remembering service members.

“In special tactics, we have a saying: ‘A man dies twice, once when they take their last breath and a second time when we stop saying their name,’” Kistler said. “Don’t ever let their memory fade. Learn about one of our nation’s patriots and tell their story. They were people you greeted in a grocery store, maybe coached our children in little league.

“This is a time for Americans as one body to stand up and say thank you.”

Added Kistler: “These service members come from all walks of life but they shared several fundamental qualities: courage, determination, selflessness, dedication to duty and integrity. All qualities needed to serve a cause larger than oneself.”
