The McNeese State University women’s rodeo team took first place in the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association Southern Region’s season opener Sept. 27-28 at the Panola College Rodeo in Carthage, Texas. The men’s rodeo team finished in fourth place.
In the breakaway roping event, Kyla Foster, Bell City, and Chelsea Carroll, Opelousas, tied for second place, while McKenzie Cooper, DeQuincy, finished in ninth place.
Kirsten Smith, St. Francisville, took second place in goat tying, while Lauren Hansen, Sulphur, finished third and Cooper finished eighth.
In barrel racing, Kayla Ratliff, Live Oak, Fla., finished eighth, while Stacey Devall, Denham Springs, finished ninth.
Bobby Abernathy, of Athens, Ala., won the calf roping event and Ike Fontenot, Ville Platte, finished in sixth place.
Chad Rutherford, Itasca, Texas, finished fourth in bareback riding, while Abernathy and Billy Morian, Jasper, Texas, tied for eighth place in steer wrestling.
The next rodeo is scheduled Oct. 3-5 at Southwest Texas Junior College in Ulvalde.
