The Branford Buccaneers (2-6-0) football players kept their cool in a heated game on Friday night against the Bishop John Snyder Cardinals (5-4-0) despite the Bucs’ 19-6 loss.

In a game with four injuries that required attention from the trainer and one that resulted in a Cardinal player that was placed on a back board and taken off the field by Suwannee County Fire/Rescue, to multiple unsportsmanlike conduct penalties called against Bishop Snyder, the Bucs remained composed, head coach Jason Bond said.

“They did a good job keeping their composure. There were several times where they could have lost it, but they didn’t,” Bond said.

Penalties marred the evening for both teams. The Cardinals had a total of 160 yards lost due to penalties with the Bucs close behind at 130 yards.

Bond said, “I was disappointed with the game. We made a lot of mistakes that we shouldn’t have made this late in the season. Bishop Snyder is a fundamentally sound football team and that made the difference in the outcome.”

At 10:03 in the first quarter the Cardinals’ Colin Culver caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Andrew Luzzachini. Trent Guzak’s extra point kick was good, making the score 7-0 early on.

Immediately following the touchdown, Branford’s Cole Lamb caught the kick return and ran it all the way to the Cardinal’s sixth yard line. Lamb finished the job on the next play with a four yard touchdown run. He was one yard short on his attempt for a two-point conversion, setting the score to 7-6.

Guzak finished off the first quarter with a 24 yard field goal. The score at the end of the first quarter and first half was 10-6.

The Cardinals dominated the third quarter with a 15 yard touchdown run by Luzzachini and an extra point kick by Guzak, bringing the score to 17-6.

The Cardinals earned an extra two points during the fourth quarter with a tackle in the end zone resulting in a Branford safety. The final score was 19-6.

Branford will take on Lafayette High this Friday at Buccaneer Stadium.

“This is a big rivalry game for us,” Bond said.

He said the Bucs are capable of winning, if we “play a lot better than we did tonight [Friday].”
