Live Oak's Rails to Trails awaits finishing touches

Live Oak —

Rails to Trails, a concrete trail that will begin at Heritage Park and Gardens on Helvenston Street and run to US 90 is expected to be completed within the coming weeks, Live Oak City Councilman Keith Mixon said.

“The rain has caused some setbacks,” Mixon said. “Crews are now working on the last part that will take the trail all the way to US 90.”

According to Mixon, a fence for safety and decorative purposes is about halfway completed.

“It’s going to look really good when it’s finished,” Mixon said.

With the large amount of rain recently, drainage issues were discovered along the trail, adjacent to Cross Street.

“The area, which was a former railroad bed, was low and the water wasn’t properly moving into the gully holes,” Mixon said. “They got that problem fixed and the water is moving properly now.”

Mixon believes the trail will be an asset to downtown Live Oak.

“It’s going to be a beautiful asset to this community. It’s going to be awesome,” he said.

According to Mixon, local residents are already taking advantage of the trail.

“We have had a lot of walkers the last couple of weeks,” Mixon said. “Folks are already using the trail even though it’s not open yet.”

In the fall, Mixon said they’re planning to hold an art festival along the trail once all of the lighting and greenery has been completed.

The lane will be made attractive with bulb-out areas that allow for amenities such as garbage cans, landscaping and benches to facilitate those who would like to sit in the shade along the route. The project supports the overall idea of creating an attractive pedestrian environment and “multi-use” areas, allowing people to safely transit from one activity venue to another.
