Live Oak man critically injured after being hit by vehicle

Live Oak — A Live Oak man was critically injured late Thursday night when he walked onto a roadway and was struck by an oncoming vehicle, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

According to a FHP report, on Thursday, March 6, at approximately 10:25 p.m., Robert Eaken, 69, of Live Oak, was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier and was traveling north on State Road 51. Daniel Fitzgerald, 33, also of Live Oak, was standing on the east paved apron facing the travel lanes as Eaken approached.

Fitzgerald entered the northbound lane in front of Eaken’s vehicle. As a result, Fitzgerald was struck by the right front of the Cavalier in the northbound lane. Eaken then made a “U” turn and returned to this crash scene, coming to a final rest facing south on the west shoulder of State Road 51. Fitzgerald came to a final rest face-down, facing south in the northbound travel land of State Road 51.

Fitzgerald was critically injured and was transported to Shands Hospital at the University of Florida in Gainesville for treatment.

Eaken, and his passenger, Lynn Eaken, 43, Live Oak, did not sustain injuries.
