Live Oak — FHP press release:
The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the death of a local O'Brien man, who died in a single vehicle / single occupant crash which occurred on Thursday around 2:50 p.m. on 121st Road, 5 miles northwest of OBrien. According to preliminary findings, Joseph Harold Sweeney, 53, was traveling south on 121st Road, just south of 200th Street (Rural dirt roadways) at a relatively high rate of speed (estimated at approximately 60+ in a posted 45 zone). Evidence indicates that Sweeney allowed his 2002 Chevy Impala to veer slightly off the roadway onto the right / west side of the roadway and then attempted to correct his position by over steering back to the left; inducing the vehicle into a counter clockwise yaw. The vehicle then swerved / yawed across the roadway to the left, where it then exited the roadway onto the left / eastern shoulder and collided with a large pine tree. This impact occurred to the vehicle's front left and the crush damage protruded heavily into the driver's compartment. Sweeney was unrestrained and suffered critical type injuries as a result. Sweeney was transported to Shands UF by Air Methods helicopter where he died,
presumably, as a result of those injuries.
