Six qualify to run for Mayo town council-Primary election is Oct. 1

Mayo — Qualifying for Mayo Town Council Seats 2 and 4 ended today at noon and six people qualified.

Qualifying for Seat 2 are Virginia McCray and Gordon T. Colson.

For Seat 4 there were four people who qualified. They are Mamie Thomas, Leta Hawkins, Shirley Lawson and Lemon Curtis Watson.

The Mayo Town Council consists of five members. Currently, Seat 1 is held by Jessica Lawson, who also serves as mayor. Seat 3 is held by Wayne Hamlin and Seat 5 is held by Ann Murphy, who also serves as vice mayor.

Danny Hewett currently holds seat 2, but is retiring this year and won’t be running for re-election. Seat 4 was held by Taylor McGrew who retired on Aug. 9. His daughter Whitney McGrew was appointed to serve out the rest of her father’s term.

Town Council primary elections will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 1, and the general election will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 5. Both elections will be held at Lafayette County Library on those dates from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
