Lafayette and Suwannee schools will be open tomorrow. Hamilton has joined Columbia County and schools will be closed tomorrow

Jasper — The question has been asked if schools will be open due to the frigid temperatures that are expected. Schools in Suwannee and Lafayette counties are scheduled to be open tomorrow. Hamilton and Columbia counties have informed us that schools will be closed tomorrow.

Hamilton County School Superintendent Thomas Moffses announced late this afternoon that Hamilton County schools will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 7, due to the extreme weather conditions predicted for the area. The closure affects students only. Employees are expected to report to work from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The decision to close was based on Superintendent Moffses’ discussions with members of his administrative team and Office of Emergency Management Director Henry Land.

“The safety of our students is a primary concern and there are potential road hazards that could hamper bus transportation,” said Moffses.

Both Hamilton and Columbia school districts will resume normal operating hours on Wednesday, Jan. 8. If anything changes, we will let you know.
