Mayo Woman’s Club enjoys holiday luncheon

Mayo — The Mayo Woman’s Club decided to forego their formal agenda for December’s meeting and simply enjoy one another’s company at their holiday luncheon.

Many of the members brought along special guests to join in the fun and fellowship. The delicious meal was prepared by different members of the club and consisted of sliced honey ham and turkey, squash dressing casserole, scalloped corn, candied sweet potato souffle, steamed kale and “Shirley Walker” yeast rolls, as well as two different yummy desserts, a pecan coconut pear cobbler and a fluffy congealed pistachio called Watergate Salad.

President Marie O’Steen said, “There are two tasks that we always complete at a gathering of the Woman’s Club; to say the Pledge of Allegiance and to recite our Collect.”

The “Collect” written by Mary Stuart, reads as follows:

Keep us, Oh God, from pettiness; let us be large in thought, in word, in deed.

Let us be done with fault-finding and leave off self-seeking.

May we put all away all pretense and meet each other face to face - without self-pity and without prejudice.

May we never be hasty in judgment, and always generous.

Let us take time for all things; Make us grow calm, serene, gentle.

Teach us to put into action our better impulses, straight-forward and unafraid.

Grant that we may realize it is the little things that create differences; that in the big things of life we are at one.

And may we strive to touch and to know the great common human heart of us all; and, O Lord God, let us forget not to be kind.

The ladies rounded out the gathering with a mingling game and gift exchange, and as always, a good time was had by all.
