Live Oak —
By a 4-1 vote of the Live Oak City Counci Tuesday night, City Administrator Kerry Waldron was appointed to the position of city manager. Councilman John Yulee opposed.
The appointment comes after city voters elected to change the city charter to have a manager instead of an administrator.
For several months there was discussion by both council and the Live Oak Charter Review Committee on whether the city should adopt a manager form of government or keep a city administrator. According to council ordinance, city managers, unlike city administrators, have the power to hire and fire city employees and administrative officers. They also direct the city’s departments and agencies, enforce charters and acts by the city council. The manager, just like the administrator role, still reports directly to the five board members.
The Charter Review Committee recommended city council place the measure on the May 6 ballot, which they agreed.
Councilman Adam Prins brought the matter before the board Tuesday night to be voted on.
Councilman Keith Mixon made a motion that the city appoint Kerry Waldron to the city manager position effective immediately under his current contract. A second was made by Councilman Bennie Thomas.
“I appreciate your vote of confidence,” said Waldron, after some applause from the audience.
