Mayo — On Thursday evening Oct. 18, around 7 p.m., the Lafayette County Sheriff's Office responded to a single vehicle tractor trailer crash and fire on CR 53, according to Sheriff Brian Lamb.
Reports show that LCSO Deputies and Fire Department volunteers were dispatched to the scene about two miles north on CR 53 that involved a tractor trailer owned by Mayo Fertilizer that was hauling a load of peanuts.
The driver of the semi was distracted by a tarp coming loose on the trailer and drove off the roadway. He over-corrected and the rig overturned, coming to final rest on its passenger side and immediately caught fire, Lamb said.
Reports further state the driver was able to escape the burning tractor with minor injuries and was transported to a hospital by Lafayette County EMS. Both lanes of travel on CR 53 were temporarily closed due to the crash but were reopened a short time later. Deputies and Lafayette County Road Department personnel detoured traffic until the roadway was cleared.
