Food stamp use on increase in Hamilton

Jasper — The UF/IFAS Extension Office in Hamilton County recently researched data that showed an uptick in usage of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), more commonly referred to as food stamps.

“After looking at data shared with me by the Department of Children and Families Northeast Region Communications, it can be seen that there has been a tremendous increase in usage of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program,” said Extension Agent Heather Futch.

Futch broke out the numbers of Hamilton County residents using SNAP for the last 10 years using March as a control date.

2004: 1,391

2005: 1,821

2006: 1,796

2007: 1,826

2008: 2,026

2009: 2,583

2010: 3,117

2011: 3,339

2012: 3,626

2013: 3,685

2014: 3,654

According to the Department of Children and Families Northeast Region Communications, between Dec. 2012 and Nov. 2013, about half of all children under the age of 18 in Hamilton County were helped at some point during the year by SNAP, Futch added.
