25 years of quilts celebrated at the park

Jasper — For 25 years Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park has been hosting the Quilt Show and Sale. This year the event ran from Oct. 18-20 and drew a generous crowd of visitors throughout the weekend.

Quilts of all shapes, sizes and themes were displayed throughout the park in the museum, the auditorium and the Carillon bell tower. Nelly Bly’s was filled with shoppers and browsers admiring the many artistic displays of crafts and antique sewing machines and Cousin Thelma Boltin’s Craft Square was alive with artists and crafters.

Out on the auditorium lawn was the famous Quilt Trolley which arrives every year for the show, run by Dave and Linda Strom from Lutz, Fla. Inside the trolley is everything you ever needed or thought you needed to make a quilt. One exciting addition to the trolley this year is a doll of a woman named Holly. She’s actually a mannequin who sits behind the wheel of the trolley and looks as if she is sewing a quilt.

“I actually was going to make a doll, but it just never got made,” said Dave Strom. “This last summer, we happened to find Holly for sale. This is her first show.”

Plaster mannequins, Strom said, usually go for about $300, but he got Holly for the bargain price of $100.

“She’s plastic and she’s real light,” he said. “Then we had to find her a wig and clothing,” he added with a smile.

The Stephen Foster Quilt Show and Sale is a partnership between Lady of the Lake Quilters Guild, Florida State Parks and Stephen Foster Citizens Support Organization.
