Dr. Wade Wiley McCall, 93, resident of Gainesville, Fla., died Monday, Aug. 19, 2013 in the E. T. York Hospice Care Center, following a long illness.
Dr. McCall was born Aug. 13, 1920 in Lafayette County, Fla., to the late Roscoe and Jennie Robinson McCall. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II, serving in Okinawa where he was wounded in combat, receiving a Purple Heart and a Silver Star. He continued his service following the war until his retirement in 1980 at the rank of Lt. Colonel. Dr. McCall received his Ph.D at Michigan State University and began a teaching career as a professor of soil science, teaching at Michigan State University, the University of Florida, and at the University of Hawaii, where he retired and then returned to Gainesville. Dr. McCall was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1st Ward, Gainesville. In his free time he enjoyed photography and trains.
He was preceded in death by his wife of almost 70 years, Doris McCall in Dec. of 2011, and by two grandchildren, Andrew Duane Olsen and Jennifer Ann Smith.
He is survived by two daughters, Carole (Duane) Olsen, Sharran (Billy) Siedelberg; one son, W. Stan (Diane) McCall; grandchildren, Amy (Kurt) Davis, Mark (Stephanie) Olsen, Bryant Olsen, Laura (Odie) Griffit, Matt Moule, Lisa (David) Reid, Devin (Sang) McCall, and Neil McCall; great grandchildren, Scott & Garrett Olsen, Ryan & Jason Davis, Angie, Rachal & Maddison Olsen, Erik & Ben Hunter & Kobie Griffit, Heather & Bryan Moule, Tyler & Kaitlyn Reid, and Chase & Clare McCall.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013 at 10 a.m., in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1st Ward, 3745 NW 16th Blvd., Gainesville, with Keith Sagers, officiating. Interment services with full military honors will follow in Day Cemetery, Day, Fla. The family will receive friends, Friday, Aug. 23, 2013 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., at the funeral home.
