UPDATE: Kidnap suspect named

Victim safe in Jasper

Jasper — The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office in conjunction with the Valdosta Police Department and Duval County Sheriff’s Officers were successful in apprehending a kidnap suspect within hours after an abduction by gunpoint in Valdosta, Ga. on Monday, Jan. 13.

According to Hamilton County Sheriff Harrell Reid, a 21-year-old female student from Wiregrass Vocational Technical School in Valdosta, Ga. was getting into her car at Lincoln Realty Apartments, 1704 North Patterson Street, Valdosta, around 7:30-8 a.m. this morning when the suspect, Calvin Lamal Williams, 38, 1405 West Michigan Street, Orlando, Fla., abducted her at gunpoint.

Upon learning of the abduction, authorities issued a BOLO (be on the lookout) to area law enforcement agencies.

During the course of the kidnapping, Reid said, Williams forced the female victim to drive south on Interstate 75 and onto US 129 in Hamilton County where he made her turn onto a dirt road in an area behind Hamilton County High School. At that point, the suspect made the woman get out of the car. She attempted to take her handbag with her, but the suspect grabbed it from her and took off, leaving her behind.

Reid said a Hamilton County citizen happened upon the frightened woman and took her to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office where she was interviewed by Hamilton County Sheriff’s Officers and a Valdosta Police detective who came down to investigate the kidnapping.

The victim’s cell phone, Reid said, was in her handbag that was in the car with the suspect and authorities were able to ping the phone and locate the vehicle. Just a few hours later the suspect was apprehended and the car was recovered by the Duval County Sheriff’s Office in Jacksonville.

Reid said there was no connection between the victim, who is still unnamed, and the suspect.

Williams was not a wanted criminal, Reid said, but he has an extensive criminal history.

“Our people did an excellent job in a timely fashion and we were able to take steps to locate the vehicle and the suspect, which resulted in a quick arrest of the suspect before any more crimes could be committed,” said Reid.
