Suwannee Legacy team finishing strong

Will play in ‘Mini World Series’ this weekend

Live Oak —

The Suwannee Legacy baseball team is about to wrap up their season strong.

“We’ve played 15 tournaments and won four championships,” said Legacy Team head coach Brandon Fernald. “One of the most recognized one was Northeast Florida State we won back in May. That was probably the highlight of our season.”

Fernald said he expects the team to be wrapping up the season this coming weekend in Destin, in what he refers to as a “Mini World Series” which is the season finale. Fernald said they will play teams from several states including Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana and Tennessee and those teams are the cream of the crop as the list has already been narrowed down.

“It’s kind of interesting because you’d think it would be a lot of teams, but there will be one to two from each state,” said Fernald.

The tournament is a four-game guarantee for each team participating. The schedules haven’t been released yet, so they won’t know until the tournament which teams they will play. He said they will probably play at least a couple of teams they have already played, but expect a team or two they haven’t.

“We’ll go head to head at the competition of some we’ve never played against,” said Fernald. “It’s something new for the boys.”

Team Legacy has been playing North Florida teams so the tournament will give them an opportunity to branch out.

Fernald believes the tournament for his players will be both evenly matched and extremely competitive.

“We’re going to have to play our best baseball,” said Fernald. “We’re all about finishing strong and expect to go in with a good showing. I’ve got a lot of confidence in the boys. I’m expecting good things.”
