Tallahassee Community College placed four players on the Coaches' All-Panhandle Conference Baseball Teams, announced last week by the conference.
The four selections included three players who were named Second-Team All-PC - Daniel Bennett, Devin Gonzalez and Shawn Pleffner. Rheed Baldwin of Live Oak was an honorable mention selection in the vote conducted by the conference's six head coaches.
Bennett, a first-year player from Tallahassee, prepped at Leon High School. In addition to his second-team selection, Bennett was named Second-Team Fireman of the Year. He took the mound in a team-high 24 games, all in relief, and led the Eagles with five saves while compiling a 3-2 record and 2.66 ERA. Bennett also struck out 40 batters in only 44 innings of work.
Gonzalez, a native of Jacksonville, enjoyed a solid sophomore campaign after transferring from Florida State University, where he spent the 2007 season. He played in all 48 games in 2008, primarily as the Eagles' everyday shortstop. Gonzalez led TCC in runs scored (45), doubles (12), home runs (8), RBI (46), slugging (.574), walks (29) and total bases (97). His .325 batting average placed him third on the squad. Gonzalez has signed a national letter-of-intent with the University of Tampa.
Pleffner, a native of Annapolis, Md., played in 46 games as a freshman. He led the Eagles with a .361 batting average, while also pacing the squad with 61 hits and a .450 on-base percentage. His seven home runs and 43 RBI were second on the squad, behind Gonzalez. He also finished second on the team in runs scored (40), slugging (.533) and total bases (90).
Baldwin, a sophomore from Live Oak, batted .322 with two home runs and 30 RBI in 46 games. His .446 on-base percentage was second best on the team and he finished among the Eagles' top five in nine other offensive categories. He was recently named TCC Baseball's Student-Athlete of the Year.
The Eagles finished the 2008 season with a record of 25-23 and a fourth-place (8-12) finish in the Panhandle Conference.
