Live Oak — First published on Aug. 26

A traffic stop by the Florida Highway Patrol ended in a gunman shot by the FHP who later died on route to the hospital, Suwannee County Fire/Rescue reported.

Details are sketchy due to an ongoing investigation, but the Democrat has learned that FHP pulled over a motorist on US 90 East near CR 137 around 2 p.m. in Wellborn when the driver jumped out brandishing a hand gun. FHP shot the person four to five times.

SCFR Interim Chief James Sommers said due to weather, a life flight helicopter could not be used. The person died from his injuries on route to a Gainesville hospital.

More details will be published as they are released.

In the meantime, US 90 is closed and barricaded at CR 49 and near CR 137 for the investigation.
