Rails to Trails nears completion

Live Oak — Rails to Trails, a concrete trail that will begin at Heritage Park and run to US 90 is expected to be completed near the end of March, Live Oak City Councilman Keith Mixon said.

“We’re about halfway through the project,” Mixon said. “The project should be finished up at the end of March.”

Mixon said part of the concrete has already been laid and the contractors will keep working to extend the trail to US 90.

Previously, the trail would have begun at Heritage Park and Gardens off Helvenston Street and ended near the old Suwannee Pack plant off Railroad Avenue. The new proposed route will extend the trail by approximately 250 feet and connect to US 90.

Mixon said by extending the trail, it will be complete and will allow the trail to connect to downtown Live Oak.

The lane will be made attractive with bulb-out areas that allow for amenities such as garbage cans, landscaping and benches to facilitate those who would like to sit in the shade along the route. The project supports the overall idea of creating an attractive pedestrian environment and “multi-use” areas, allowing people to safely transit from one activity venue to another.

Rails to Trails is one of two projects adopted by the CRA as a result of a series of community forums. The CRA teamed up with Live Oak’s public works contractor CH2M Hill OMI, who assembled a list of projects that could be completed based on the input from the forums.

In the proposed plan, the Rails to Trails project could eventually support an entertaining and convenient trolley service from Heritage Park to the downtown shopping area.

Estimated cost to complete the project is $110,000.
