The Branford High School football team won their spring game against the Bell High School Bulldogs in Bell on Thursday, May 22, with a final score of 6-0.
The Bulldogs took possession first but could only muster a few yards before the Buccaneers took control. A 15-yard completed pass gave the Bucs a first down on the Bulldogs 42 yard line. On the next drive the Bucs made it to the 45 yard line on a lateral pass but were unable to garner much more.
The second quarter was uneventful as both teams began learning the other’s strengths and weaknesses.
A pass play was complete to Branford’s Shawn Belanger in the third quarter which earned him 20 yards, putting the Bucs at the Bell 30 yard line. A penalty on the play, however, put the ball back on the 50. It was now first and 20 for the Bucs who couldn’t recover. A long pass attempt was intercepted by the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs were first and 10 at their 23 yard line. A penalty flag went down for the Bulldogs and it was now second and 11 at the 25. The Bulldogs picked a few yards on the next play, but not enough for a first down. For the remainder of the third quarter it was back and forth.
The fourth quarter saw more back and forth with a few yards gained for each side.
Just when it looked like it may go into overtime, with just two seconds to go in the game, quarterback Jordan Weidle fired a pass to Alec Burt who caught it in the end zone giving the Bucs the first touchdown of the game and the win.
“We played hard throughout the game,” said BHS head football coach Roy Harden. “It is always hard to know what to expect during the spring when playing a different team.”
He said they didn’t have any film about their opponents or even a scouting report and playing that way defensively makes it more of a challenge.
“Overall, I thought we played better in the second half,” said Harden.
