Make it a day 'on,' not a day off!

Local groups mark Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service

Submitted

Communities and nonprofits across the country are gearing up for a record number of volunteers on the Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service. On Saturday, Jan. 17 and Monday, Jan. 19, volunteers from throughout Suwannee County will join together to celebrate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by collaborating on service to our community. There are many activities taking place, but the key service project will take place at Millennium Park, where area youth and diverse community members will participate in cleaning up and painting an historical mural.

Youth Advocacy Partnership (YAP) is an organization that promotes community involvement among youth. YAP, along with the Downtown Revitalization Committee, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, is spearheading the event in collaboration with various community organizations.

"Dr. Martin Luther King encouraged citizens to contribute to their communities by uniting and taking action," said Steven Schneitman, executive director of the YAP. "Providing opportunities to actively serve the community is vital and 100 percent in line with the spirit of MLK National Day of Service."

Make it a day on, not a day off. Come out and participate in this opportunity serve.
