I read a few weeks ago in the Gainesville Sun how they are planning a three day summit to, as they say in the paper, in hopes of reaching a consensus on the next round of changes for Florida public schools. The key word in the last sentence is changes. The state and national politicians have already made so many changes since the 1960s in public education. It almost looks as though they are trying to dumb our kids down on purpose. I know nothing about the latest changes to our public schools but they call it Common Core State Standards. About all I know about these Common Core State Standards is it can’t be as bad as the FCAT that our children have had to deal with since Jeb Bush was governor of Florida. Now Gov. Rick Scott is here to make changes in public education for political reasons. Oops. But now he is against these changes for reelection reasons. Whatever. This is a standard rule for making changes for our kids in public education.
We must give our local public schools back to our local elected school boards. In order to do this we must get all state and federal elected politicians out of our schools. In order to do this we must get rid of grant money. Grant money allows the state and federal politicians access to our schools. Just send us back the amount of tax dollars we are supposed to have and forget jumping through the hoops.
If we have a strong PTA we can cause this to happen because we will also have city and county governments with us. Mamas and daddies, grandmas and grandpas we owe this to our children. I don’t care how white or black you are, let’s come together and give all of our children a great education. For if we don’t, I am afraid it won’t get done.
