Twelve dedicated officers of the Baton Squad division of the Emergency Response Team from Mayo Correctional Institution made their annual Torch Run for Special Olympics Monday, April 14.

The torch is passed from law enforcement agencies starting in March and continuing through the month of April.

The Lafayette team made their run from the Mayo Community Center to the Lafayette County Courthouse.

Lt. David Maddox, squad leader and Sgt. Troy Sapp, assistant squad leader, were joined by fellow members: Sgt. Brennis Powe; Sgt. Bobby Winburn; Officer Gary Fortner; Officer Daryl Harrell; Officer Kevin Laminack; Officer Matt Tompkins; Officer Terry McMullen; Officer Mike Roberts; Officer Shon Spikes and Officer Hank Spitzer.

This is one of the many special fund raising events that are held to raise monies for Special Olympics Florida.

The ultimate objective of Special Olympic Florida is to help people with mental retardation participate as productive and respected members of society and to increase the public's awareness of their capabilities and needs.
