Lafayette High School student James Matthew Battey, 17, died Wednesday, Oct. 12 when he was ejected from the 1994 Ford pickup that overturned several times on County Road 405 in Lafayette County, according to Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Floyd. The driver, Heide M. Walker, 18, also of Mayo, was taken by Lafayette County EMS to Shands of Live Oak in stable condition.

The accident occurred at 3:25 p.m., shortly after Battey and Walker had left school for the day.

According to Trooper Floyd's report Walker failed to negotiate a curve on CR 405, left the roadway onto the grass shoulder, then over-steered while attempting to bring the vehicle back onto the roadway. Walker's attempts to control the pickup failed and it began to rotate and overturned multiple times before coming to rest upright on the south shoulder of CR 405.

Neither occupant of the pickup wore seatbelts said Trooper Floyd and charges are pending.
