Fire, tires and barbed wire are obstacles to be expected and more at the world’s largest running series which is coming to Camp Weed in Live Oak on March 31.
The Warrior Dash is a 5K, or 3.02 miles, of obstacles sure to test one’s physical threshold. The event has been at more than 65 locations across the globe.
Following jumping over fire, trudging through mud and more than 14 obstacles, during the Warrior Dash, warriors and spectators will be celebrating with live music, food and more.
“Warrior Dash provides an incomparable experience for participants and spectators,” said Race Director Alex Yount. “The unique combination of athleticism, live music, turkey legs and beer keeps Warriors coming back for more.”
The top three warriors overall for both men and women will receive a custom engraved steel warrior helmet. The top three times in each age division for both men and women will receive a steel warrior helmet trophy. If the creativity flows faster than the feet, there will be a prize for the craziest costume too.
“Costumes are highly encouraged! Contestants are called on stage where the winner is determined by audience applause. The best costume wins a prize,” according to the web site warriordash.com.
Warrior Dash is partnering with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in 2012. The St. Jude Warriors program encourages Warrior Dash racers to fundraise for St. Jude. There will be a VIP area at the Dash for Warriors that raise more than $250 for St. Jude. There will be showers, catering and a lounge for the VIP Warriors.
“Warrior Dash hopes to raise more than $1 million for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital with the help of 2012 participants,” Yount stated.
Warrior Dash works with GreenSneakers, an organization that gives the tennis shoes a second chance. In 2011, Warriors donated 500,000 pounds of tennis shoes.
Yount also cited that “In 2011, more than half a million athletes selected Warrior Dash as an alternative to the classic 5K race. Participants can expect new extremes for 2012 as Warrior Dash returns with a vengeance, debuting more innovative and exciting obstacles than ever before. The festival area will be the scene of even greater celebrations with more food, drinks and post-race activities.”
While Warrior Dash may sound like a load of fun, it doesn’t come without its share of risks.
“There's certainly risk involved in Warrior Dash, but we take every precaution possible to get you to the finish line safely. There will be paramedics and an ambulance on site in case of an emergency. You enter Warrior Dash at your own risk,” Warrior Dash officials stated.
Pre-registration is required for the dash. The last day to register for Warrior Dash is at 11:59 p.m., CST, on March 19. Registration is $70, per person and there are no team events but officials encourage groups to participate together.
Each person registering will receive a Warrior Dash T-shirt, a fuzzy helmet, a custom Warrior Dash finish medal, post race snack and water and for participants 21 and over, a free beer.
“Are you a warrior? According to the Random House Dictionary, warrior means ‘a person who shows or has shown great vigor, courage or aggressiveness, as in politics or athletics’,” Warrior Dash officials ask.
