Getting ‘em on and getting ‘em in has been a problem of sorts for the Lafayette Lady Hornets softball team and that was evident last Friday night when the Lady Hornets hosted the Providence Stallions and dropped a 4-1 decision. Providence was a team Lafayette disposed of in the regional semi-final’s last season in their journey to the State Final Four.
But on this night the hits were far and in between for coach Derrik Garland’s ball club. Rachel Barnadore limited the host team to three hits over the six innings she pitched. She gave way to Jess Childers in the seventh inning. Childers allowed two Lady Hornet base runners in the seventh but Lafayette failed to score. Barnadore picked up the win for the Stallions.
Lafayette starter, Lindsey Hamlin was almost untouchable after the first inning, but it was the first inning that Providence did most of the damage. The big blow was a two-run home run off the bat of shortstop Kathy Zambrano. Childers opened the Stallions first with a slug-bunt just over the head of Lafayette first baseman Heidi Hendricks. Hamlin got Melissa Matchett on a pop up but Zambrino drove the ball over the right centerfield fence for a two run shot. Hamlin hit Sarah Dorin with a pitch and she later scored the third run of the inning to give Providence a 3-0 lead.
Lafayette avoided the shutout, scoring an unearned run in the fourth inning. Kelsey Land reached on a fielder’s choice play. She came around to score on a throwing error that allowed the ball to rattle around down the right field line.
Hamlin did allow the fourth Providence run in the fifth inning getting the first two batters on rollers to the infield. Zambrino legged out an infield hit, her third hit of the game, and scored on two wild pitches. Zambrino had three of her team’s six hits off Hamlin.
Lafayette’s safeties came from Kysten Millard, Kelsey Land and Katie Sapp.
Hamlin struck out nine Providence batters and walked one batter.
The Lady Hornets will hold Senior Night on Friday night, April 18. The festivities will get underway at 5 p.m. with the game schedule for 6 p.m.
