JV Hornets improve to 3-3 with win

By Ed Taylor, Sports Correspondent

Evan Barrington collected two hits and the Lafayette junior varsity baseball team scored eight times in the second inning to rout the junior Trenton Tigers 14-2 last Thursday in baseball action. The win evened the JV team’s overall record to 3-3 on the season. Brook Lamineck, and Chris Allen had safeties in the win. Each drove in a run for the Hornets.

The 14-run barrage lacked any offensive prowness for the Hornets. In fact, they collected but four hits in the game with the majority of their scoring coming in the first two innings.

Starter Wayne Atwell picked up the win in working the first four innings. Austin Henderson came on to hurl the fifth inning. Atwell allowed two runs on two hits for Trenton. Atwell struck out eight batters and walked but two. He did hit one Trenton batter. Henderson surrendered two hits in the fifth but did not allow a runner to come home to score. Both hits came with two outs in the inning.

Trenton took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The inning unfolded with shortstop Lamineck dropping a pop up in the infield off the bat of Cody Hardy. Corby Pugh laced a double down the left field line scoring Hardy. Pugh moved to third on a wild pitch and scored with Darren Skawienski grounded out to first baseman Connor Lashley. Atwell struck out both Tyler Brown and Brett Colson to end the threat.

Lafayette assumed a 5-2 lead with five runs in their half of the first inning. Pugh, who started for Trenton, walked the first three batters he faced to load the bases. All three runners scored without the benefit of a base hit. A hit batsman, a fielder’s choice and walk forced home two runners.

Atwell struck out the Trenton side in the top of the second inning and the Hornets sent 13 batters to the plate in the bottom of the inning to take a 13-2 lead. Lamineck singled a run home as did Chris Allen. There were four walks in the inning for Lafayette.

The Hornets added their final run in the bottom of the fourth. Chris Spradling drew a one out walk and scored on Lamineck’s sacrifice fly to left field. Steve Pittman had an infield single in the inning but the Hornets left the bases loaded after Lashley flied out deep to left field.

The Hornets will entertain Hawthorne in a 4 p.m. first pitch game Friday night.
