Lafayette County commissioners sworn in

Mayo — At the Nov. 13 meeting of the Lafayette County Board of County Commissioners three newly re-elected board members were sworn in by Clerk of Courts Ricky Lyons; Lance Lamb, District 1, Donnie Hamlin, District 3, and Earnest Jones, District 5.

Lyons explained that the Secretary of State’s office sends out the oaths and affidavits to each elected official who must then sign them.

“That is like the real McCoy, so to speak,” said Lyons. “When we do it in front of an audience it’s basically ceremonial.”

Lyons said it reminded him of his preacher who always comments that you can make a decision within your heart and within yourself, but if you walk the aisle and stand up in front of everybody else, that makes it a little more concrete.

“In essence, that’s kind of like what the public ceremony for swearing in of officers is,” said Lyons.

Hamlin, Lamb, and Jones each took the oath of office with their families by their sides.

Lamb will be serving his second term, Hamlin his fourth term and Jones his sixth term as county commissioner.

“So, we’ve got some experience up here,” Lyons said.

After the swearing in ceremonies, Lance Lamb was elected for the position of chairman. Once he and outgoing chairman Earnest Jones swapped seats, Gail Garrard was elected to serve as vice chair.

Lyons said for the past 15 or so years the Lafayette County Commission has been allowing the chair and vice chair to serve for two years at a time because of all the paperwork involved when changing out those positions.

Lyons said there are probably about 35 different bank accounts that need new signatures when a chairperson is elected, as well changes that need to be made on numerous other documents because of all the paperwork the chairperson signs on a regular basis.

Congratulations to all the Lafayette County Commissioners.
