July 4 fireworks at sports complex in Mayo-Donations still needed

Mayo — The Lafayette County Chamber of Commerce will be helping to sponsor a 4th of July fireworks spectacular at the Edward Perry Sports Complex beginning at 9 p.m. on July 4.

In case of rain, the event will be moved to Saturday, July 5, at the same location, according to Leta Hawkins of the chamber.

“The Chamber of Commerce will be selling hot dogs, drinks and desserts on location,” said Hawkins. “Steve Shiver will also be selling boiled peanuts.”

Hawkins said the cost of fireworks has increased significantly and they would like to keep the fireworks show locally, but without financial support it may become impossible to continue them. Each year the chamber puts $1,500 toward the cost of the fireworks, but the price has gone up this year to $5,000.

“If anyone would like to donate money toward the fireworks, please contact the chamber at 386-294-2705,” Hawkins said.
