Day resident dies in motorcycle crash
Pickup truck pulls into path at Perry intersection
By Ira Mikell, Free Press Reporter
Thomas Henry Smith, 51, of Day, was killed in a motorcycle accident in Taylor County on July 3, according to Florida Highway Patrol reports.
Smith, a long time resident of Lafayette County, was traveling west on CR 30 on his 2002 Harley Davidson motorcycle when a 1996 Chevy pickup truck driven by Perry resident Matthew Timothy Wiles, 18, entered his path, said FHP. Smith’s motorcycle struck the right front of the pickup, throwing Smith from his machine. Wiles’ vehicle then struck the front of a 2000 Mazda driven by James Russell Cannon II, 23, of Wellborn. Neither Wiles nor Cannon was hurt.
Smith, who was wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene, said FHP.
Total estimated damage to the vehicles was $20,000, the report indicates.
The Taylor County Sheriff’s Office, Perry Fire Department, and the Florida Highway Patrol assisted each other at the scene while FHP Corporal J. B. Woodward handled the investigation, which is ongoing.
