FCAT scores tossed out in one 5th grade class at SIS due to testing violation

Live Oak — FCAT 2.0 science, reading and math scores for this past year in one fifth grade class at Suwannee Intermediate School have been invalidated due to “a violation of the testing protocol that has impacted the entire class,” a letter from Superintendent of Schools Jerry Scarborough reads to one parent.

Scarborough nor the school board’s attorney would comment on this situation.

The matter is currently being investigated by the Florida Department of Education, Scarborough said.

The FDOE reported that they received a “report of a violation that took place during a grade 5 FCAT 2.0 mathematics test administration in Suwannee County. As a result of the violation, student test scores were invalidated.”

FDOE public information officer Cheryl Etters reported by email that per Florida Statute 1012.796(4), she cannot elaborate any further.

The letter obtained by the Democrat from a parent of one of the children in the class shows that the child, and all others in the class, will face no academic consequences by not having a fifth grade FCAT score.
“Promotion to the next grade level is not affected by this situation,” the letter dated May 30, 2013, reads.

The mother of the child, who asked not to be named, said she believes the children were “cheated” out of more than test scores.

“Our children went through an entire school year learning and going over the material for that FCAT ... and now they will never have a score for FCAT in fifth grade,” the parent said. “There was no option to retake the FCAT, because they can use previous year’s scores for placement in the middle school. That’s crap in my opinion.”
