Voter rolls swell in Suwannee
600-plus added to books for election
By Vanessa Fultz, Democrat Reporter
More than 600 new voter registrations have been recorded in recent months in Suwannee County, Supervisor of Elections Glenda Williams said Thursday. As of Monday, the last day to register for the Nov. 4 election, there were 24,758 registered voters in the county, an increase of 606 - or 2.5 percent - over the number registered to vote in the Aug. 26 primary.
"This is the most significant number of new voters that we've had in the years I've served in this office during a presidential year," Williams said. "People are obviously interested in voting for our next president."
Williams said that 10 or more people a day visited her office to sign up the week before the deadline to register.
Of the new registrants, 285 are Democrats, 242 are Republicans, 59 have no party
affiliation and 20 are designated as other, according to the elections office.
The shift in numbers accounts for new voters, as well as voters who have moved into and out of the county, said Williams. It does not include voters who changed precincts within the county.
As of yesterday, 2,830 absentee ballots had been issued. Absentee ballots must be mailed or turned in to the election's office by 7 p.m. on Election Day, Nov. 4.
Early voting begins Oct. 20 and continues through Nov. 1.
