Police responding to a minor traffic accident in Alabama found that the man involved was wanted here on charges of child molestation. Billy Ray Rogers, 63, was extradited back to Jasper on July 10, where he was formally charged with four felony counts: two counts of lewd or lascivious molestation of a child and two counts of lewd or lascivious conduct on a child: solicitation. Rogers was booked into the Hamilton County Jail and later released on a $50,000 bond.
Police reports indicate Rogers accidentally backed his Dodge pick-up truck into a diesel pump at a Hamilton, Ala. convenience store on July 5. Upon running a standard driver's license check, investigator Jimmy Pendley of the local police department discovered Rogers had an outstanding warrant from the Hamilton County Florida Sheriff's Department dating back to May 31, 2007. Pendley took Rogers into custody, where he was held pending extradition.
Florida Department of Corrections records indicate Rogers is a 20-year Corrections Department veteran. He retired in 2001 after serving nine years at the rank of correctional officer captain. His last duty assignment was Hamilton Correctional Institution.
A court date has been set for July 31.
