POLICE BEAT: Teen charged in golf cart theft

By Carnell Hawthorne Jr., Reporter

An O'Brien teen was charged with two counts of burglary and two counts of grand theft Sunday after allegedly stealing two golf carts from beneath a barn at Camp Dovewood.

Authorities say the young male, a minor whose name was not released, rode his bike to Camp Dovewood at 23221 101st Street and stole two golf carts from underneath a pole barn. He was found in possession of one the golf carts parked in the woods near his home, reports show. The minor was read his rights and questioned about the theft. He denied having stolen the carts but later admitted his guilt, according to reports.

The minor told Suwannee County Sheriff’s Deputy Tom Mullins that he first tried to take a red golf cart but got it stuck in a wooded area behind the Dovewood barn. He then reportedly went back and stole a second cart. Authorities say the minor confessed to driving the cart around his neighborhood for a while before driving it home and parking it in the woods behind his house.

After questioning, the young man was left in the custody of his parents, according to a sheriff's officer spokesperson.

Both carts were returned to their owner. According to the owner, each was valued at $2,500.
