Blueberry festival’s here

The fun starts today in Wellborn

By Vanessa Fultz, Democrat Reporter

If you plan on attending the Blueberry Festival in Wellborn this weekend, be forewarned: your mouth might turn blue. There will be blueberry cobbler, blueberry pancakes -- and blueberry syrup to pour over the pancakes -- even blueberry bubble gum and fudge. And more.

The event is set for today and tomorrow at Andrews Square on the grounds of the Wellborn Community Center in Wellborn. Participants will enjoy numerous arts and crafts and food vendors and local entertainment. There is also a bigger and better Country Store, in which participants can purchase "country" items and anything blueberry.

"The $5 pancake breakfast alone is worth the drive over there," event chairman Wendell Snowden said one Tallahassee man told him.

"We're going to have a bigger and better festival this year," said Snowden.

Snowden said Wellborn Committee Association members expect the event to draw 3,000-5,000 participants from south Georgia to central Florida. Twenty-five percent more vendors are registered this year over last year. The parade will be about three times bigger this year and the talent show has many more entrants than usual.

The parade will feature floats and antique cars, tractors and military vehicles. The Suwannee High band and color guard are set to march down the streets of Wellborn.

Proceeds from the festival fund the Wellborn Committee Association's efforts to serve the community, especially the needy, through several events throughout the year -- a Thanksgiving dinner, Christmas party, Easter Egg Hunt and Halloween celebration. The association also assists the needy throughout the year.

For more information about the event call Wendell Snowden at 386-963-1157.
