4-H club spreads the news: Ag is great throughout the state!

By Clayton Kerr

The Live Oak Learners 4-H club celebrated Ag Literacy Day with some of the students of Suwannee Elementary School on April 10. Members of Live Oak Learners read educational books about Florida farms to 12 classes of second and third grade students. Ag Literacy Day is an annual event sponsored by Ag in the Classroom and the Florida Department of Agriculture.

This event is held each spring in which industry representatives and volunteers read a designated children’s book to elementary students. The book is designed to help students understand the importance of agriculture in the state of Florida. The book reminds students that our food doesn’t come from the grocery store, but from farms, ranches, dairies and more.

After reading the book “These Florida Farms” to the students, the Live Oak Learners club members shared information about agricultural products grown in Suwannee County. The classes were invited to go outside to pet several farm animals brought by club members. The Horvath family brought a 1 1/2-year-old Maine/Angus cow and her 4-month-old calf. They also brought a 7 1/2-month-old Rainbow cross hen named Ginger. The Sykes family brought a 9-month-old Dutch rabbit named Mischief.

Live Oak Learners is a home school 4-H club that meets the first Thursday of every month at the Suwannee County Extension Office at 1 p.m. For more information about this club, please contact Clayton Kerr at 386-397-2692.
