The city of Live Oak is considering letting residents ride their golf carts on city roads. Local businessman Tan Fletcher introduced the idea to the city council Tuesday night.
"I think the community would feel warmer and friendlier," Fletcher told the council. "For some it will be a necessity with the economy like it is."
The council asked City Attorney Erny Sellers to review a similar ordinance that has been in place for three years in Jasper. Sellers will modify the ordinance to fit the needs of Live Oak and will submit it to the council May 26 for a decision.
Mayor Sonny Nobles questions whether it's safe to have golf carts on city streets.
"I think it's a novel idea," Nobles said by phone Thursday. "My only concern is the safety of the public. I think there would be a safety issue when you start mixing golf carts and vehicles."
Council president John Hale supports the idea.
"I'm for it,” Hale said Thursday. “I think they need to regulate the age and if it's operated after dark brake lights and headlights need to be used. It's something that will save some fuel, every little bit helps."
State statutes do not allow the use of golf carts on state roads, according to Hale.
The meeting to decide on an ordinance begins at 4:45 p.m. at City Hall.
